MODERN BRITISH RESTAURANT, LONDON, UK

THE PARAKEET, KENTISH TOWN, LONDON

It looks like my local area is getting more interesting with another upcoming innovative eatery.  Previously known as the Oxford Tavern, the Parakeet is now also a gastro pub, run by a head chef Ben Allen and sous chef Ed Jennings, both of whom have come from BRAT Restaurant.

My friend who was dining with me recounted that the reason the location of the was chosen, Kentish Town, is because it was half way between where the chefs live (Camden and Highgate) - is this true?

We started our evening with drinks at the bar, being a Wednesday, they were serving cocktails for a fiver per cocktail - my default choice... espresso martini! Do check for this deal before you go, the day of the week can change!

The queue for drinks at the bar was quite long, our party divided into two; some to chase the drinks order at the bar and the other part to chill, relax and catch up.

Perhaps it was a particularly busy night, but I felt the 'harassment' of the bar staff to the point where conversations with their clientele were a bit short and without a smile. Not a good impression. Definitely 'going with the flow' was not something one could describe the staff at the bar and those that came to collect the drinks orders. I think having only two bartenders (one that only could prepare cocktails) was rather lacking for that evening.

Luckily our dining table became available earlier than our booking, so our focus turned to the dining room and not the bar/pub.

Now the dining room staff experience was completely different!

Our waiter (I forgot to take his name, but he is an Italian) was completely jovial and engaged with us over our drinks and food choices, totally matched with my friend who put him through his paces for recommendations.

We decided to order most of the starters so that we could try and share amongst ourselves.

I think one could just dine on the starters but being gourmands, we definitely had to order mains as well... and even convinced our lovely waiter that we hadn't ordered too much!

What makes a good meal? Of course the quality and consistency of the dishes which you cannot deny here at The Parakeet.  But what makes it more enjoyable? The company you have with the meal and the interaction with the staff serving your meal.  In this case it all came together for an extremely enjoyable meal, good food and good wine.

In terms of value, this is probably more on the expensive side but in these times everything seems to have increased in prices. If you're thinking of just going to your local pub for a meal/bite to eat, you might get a surprise with your bill at the end here. Despite being in a pub, dining at The Parakeet is more dining in a restaurant.
