BLU-THU RESTAURANT



I guess you could say this is my local when in Austria! Situated at the border between two villages of Bludesh and Thueringen (hence the name) in the valley of Walgau, Vorarlberg, Austria.

Not a restaurant that you would immediately think of trying if you're passing by, it is located above a fuel station (2nd floor). Accessed via a lift, the internal space of the eating area is relatively cosy, but with huge floor to ceiling windows on one side giving you a magnificent view of the mountains to the south. The biggest attraction of this location is the enormous terrace, which has now a canopy and heaters to maximise usage. In the summer, this is one of the selling points, with extensive views of the mountains to the south, north and east of the valley.

Having visited on many occasions, this time I was here for dinner in the winter, so definitely not on the terrace this time round. We wondered when we arrived why the restaurant was quiet and that they had spaced out our booking time from others, but we thought in the end that it was probably due to the staffing levels... there was only one front of restaurant staff.

Being a party of several languages, our server was very patient with us as discussions flew with the menu required to be translated to the relevant language.

The menu is a mix of traditional and modern Austrian cuisine and vegetarians are also catered for.

Starters:
Carpaccio of local beef ()
Paprikacremesuppe, Feta-Käse-Stangerl (Paprika cream soup with feta cheese sticks)

One of the first impressions for me is the colour! Very appealing! And of course the taste follows.  The carpaccio simply melted in your mouth - whatever combination that takes your fancy, be it the walnuts with the beef, or tomatoes or the flakes of parmesan, rocket, balsamic vinegar, you could combine or eat them individually.

Paprika soup isn't something I come across as much, so it was extremely interesting to find a version that is creamy and yet with the cleanness of the paprika flavour - the feta cheese sticks just gave enough "sharpness" to contrast with the creamy paprika.

Mains:
Gefüllte Schweineschulter, Rotkraut, Spätzle (Stuffed pork shoulder, red cabbage, spaetzle)
Filet vom heimischen Rind 200g, Grillgemüse, Steak Fries, Kräuterbutter (Fillet of local beef 200g, grilled vegetables, steak fries, herb butter)
Wok „Sweet Soja“, gebratene Rinderfiletstreifen (Wok “Sweet Soja”, fried strips of beef fillet)
Ragout vom heimischen Hirsch, Rotkraut, Spätzle (Ragout from local deer, red cabbage, spaetzle)

So we kind of covered the classic steak, an oriental twist and typical Austrian cuisine between us. 

Spaetzle is a kind of egg/flour pasta more resembling dumplings and chewy in nature. It is very common in this region of Austria and is served plain with a ragout or typically with cheese as in Kaesespaetzle. If you are not accustomed to it, you will probably find it quite heavy.

All the dishes were excellent and as you can see beautifully presented.

Dessert:
Eispalatschinken, Schokosauce, Sahne (Ice cream pancakes, chocolate sauce, cream)
Affogato (Espresso Ice Cream)

Most of us couldn't manage dessert after those mains - affogato is always an easy option, and for the one that could, there was a massive pancake with ice cream to get through!

All in all a very enjoyable and delicious dinner. I do have to mention again that our server was excellent as though she wasn't confident with speaking English, she did understand and was very receptive to our broken German and English sentences mixed together.
