TAIWANESE DUMPLING RESTAURANT, LONDON, UK

DIN TAI FUNG (CENTRE POINT)

As dumplings go, Din Tai Fung is known for it's Xiao Long Bao, pork dumplings where the dumpling skin is just fine enough to still contain the "soup" when steamed.

I first came across its fame in Singapore so I was quite excited that a more refined dumpling was now available in London. In the beginning there was only one branch in Covent Garden, but soon the Centre Point and Selfridges branches popped up.

I particularly like Centre Point for the ease of getting a table unlike the queuing you have to do at Covent Garden.  An unusual location, the place looks more like a cocktail bar/nightclub than a place to eat dumplings.

They do offer an area for group dining which looks pretty fun, dumplings and cocktails sounds like a good combo for this!

Although their menu offers other dishes besides dumplings, I think if you want to eat here, it really is all about the dumplings!

On most occasions I opted to drop into the restaurant without a booking - the last couple of times though, reservations were made and if you are thinking of dining over the weekend service or even in the evening, I think this is wise. My hope that people might overlook this location has past as each time I eat here, there are more and more people.

Is it worth it you ask? To be honest, the dumplings are either out of this world or mediocre. When it is good it is really good, so I hope they will try to improve their consistency of serving food. Besides the typical xiao long pao, their mushroom with truffle dumplings are particularly good as well.

To counter balance the carbs, in terms of green vegetables, try their spinach or string green beans with garlic, or their dou miao (pea shoot).

Of course if you can really eat, their noodles are pretty good - the portions are not large. I usually go for their mushroom and edamame or the mince pork in a bean sauce.

If you have never tried salted egg yolk lava buns - liu sha bao - do give it a try! It's an experience! But if you can't manage something that heavy, then the mango pomelo sago is always a refreshing option.
