JAPANESE RESTAURANT, ANGEL ISLINGTON, LONDON, UK

SANJUGO ANGEL

One of my friend's local that she had meant to try in ages but hadn't.

A compact eatery tucked down a side street off the main Angel high street. It has a bar vibe since it does offer a lot of sake and Japanese whisky. On this occasion we only tried a small carafe of sake as my friend was not really drinking and I don't actually drink all that much anyway.

We were here for a small meal, yeah sure, my friend would say, for a quick catch up amid our oddly tight schedules of late.

Sitting in the middle of the ground floor subdued lighting dining area, we chose: Genki Beef Donburi, Prawn Katsu Curry, and to share, soft shell crab roll, some sashimi, and the Hiramasa Salad which is thinly sliced yellowtail fish with ponzu sauce and white truffle oil.

Excellent! And perfect for what we needed. It seems that as Londoners we are seemingly spoilt for variety/choice and as I was about to write that this is typically comfort food, it occurred to me that for some, this would be totally exotic.

I must return to try more, and also to learn more on Japanese Whisky.

As it really was only myself that tasted the sake, there was still a lot left which hopefully was appreciated by the nearby table of guys who were a bit surprised by the free sake offer.

JULY 2024 UPDATE

It's been a while, a lunch date this time, and the place was equally as busy though luckily we booked in advance.

By day, there is much more of a combination of drop in's and bookings, but as the place isn't particularly big, I suggest a booking always.

This time we were into our donburi's - in some other establishments, you get quite a lot of rice (sometimes excessive) but here the balance is actually just right for me, especially for lunch as we didn't want anything too heavy.

We ordered a omakase sashimi and a tuna tataki as well.  The food is as good as our last time... very good!

After our non-alcoholic spritzes: yuzu and lychee respectively, we ended our meal with some mochi ice cream - black sesame, mango and yuzu flavours as we dragged lunch along with our constant nattering...
