MED SALLEH, KENTISH TOWN, LONDON

Woo hoo! A restaurant from back home in my area!

I was super excited when I found out that this Malaysian street food restaurant was opening up a branch in my neighbourhood, and of course I waited eagerly to give it a try.

Street food is really one of the best foods from South East Asia... memories of hawker stalls on/off the street in the old days, to coffee shops or kopitiams, and nowadays back home, the stalls are all in basements of shopping centres and with air-conditioning.

The plate size of street food really allows you to taste several different dishes for a meal.

I would only say that please do not compare prices to back home in South East Asia, you just can't otherwise you would faint from the cost realisation, even if you don't do a conversion for the currency, you would still find it expensive.  But this is London, and you pay London prices.

Another thing to consider - those of us from Singapore, note the name of the restaurant and what type of food is served... MALAYSIAN FOOD and in particular from IPOH!!!

If you think you're going to get Singaporean type food... you will be disappointed.

My memories particularly of food from Ipoh is when I travelled with my parents from Singapore up to Penang by car. Ipoh was a stop we always made, especially to eat.

So there are two dishes I really wanted to try... the Ipoh shredded chicken & prawns hor fun, and the Penang Char Kway Teow.

It has been a while since I have eaten pure Malaysian food. Love it!

Other dishes ordered are the Malaysian stuffed tofu, the salted fish and chicken claypot rice, and the kangkong blachan.

Also I couldn't help but order their non alcoholic pina colada, or as they say, onglaicolada which you will appreciate if you speak hokkien.

There is a small selection for dessert. No choice really, it's got to be the mango sago pudding!

Unless you are late for a lunch meal, most of the time the restaurant or kopitiam is bustling with people. There are even queues outside for dinner. So if you want to try it, you really need to book a table in advance.

Who knows, you might bump into someone famous here, keep a lookout!

If you really miss good Malaysian cooking, do try this kopitiam out. I shall be returning to try each dish that they offer.
