MODERN FRENCH RESTAURANT, LONDON, UK

64 GOODGE STREET

This is the latest restaurant from the Woodhead Group that includes another two of my favourite restaurants, Portland and Clipstone .

Opened in August 2023, I missed the opportunity of trying it out during its soft opening, so with a friend of mine, we booked a table at our earliest opportunity. Being 'kiasu' I booked the first table seating of the day.

Quote from their website:

Our menu is based on “French cooking from an outsider’s perspective” as seen by chef Stuart Andrew

So I've categorise this restaurant as Modern French for the moment.

Firstly I must make the comment, like their sister restaurants of Portland and Clipstone, the staff are very friendly, approachable and helpful.

We had a table for two just to the left side as you enter the dining room, the other side on our visit was set up for groups of four or more.

Hors d’œuvres :
Snail, bacon & garlic ‘bon bons’ &
Kintyre smoked salmon, blini, crème crue & condiments.
Cervelle de canut & crudités

The Cervelle de canut was actually a misunderstanding by our server, we had asked what it was and in her mind she thought wanted to try it - so we actually got an extra dish to start our luncheon catch up.

The snail bon bons was what caught my eye - love the choice of words and yes it was for me an intriguing clever dish to come up with. It reminded me of a friend's description of encrusted lamp chops - lamp lollipops!

Starters:
Scallops, lentils & beurre blanc
Morteau sausage, walnut & Morbier tourte

There was a fight to who got to order the scallops and they were excellent.  We had to ask what the Morteau sausage was - interesting alternative... meat pie!

I do like the naming of the dishes... and I now understand their statement of French cooking from an outsider's perspective.  Clever menu naming!

Mains:
Sea bass, spinach & sauce mouclade
Saddle of lamb, green beans & sauce Paloise

Sides:
Tomatoes & sauce vierge
Aligot (basically mashed potatoes with some cheese)

I think the choice in mains was harder to make - which of course means we have to come again to try the other dishes.

Let me point out though... out table was a tad small for what we ordered... I wish there was an expandable table leaf or something... gourmet or gourmand?

OK, I put my hands up, I forgot what dessert we ordered.  I know we were discussing about jellies and possibly the bavarois - in any case, clean plates all round.

I've included a photo of my dining partner... as... if you can vaguely make it in the background table by the window, we had a celebrity diner as well!

Did I mention about the staff? Very attentive. I had ordered a cocktail to start with, Calvados Fizz, and I actually still had most of the cocktail by the end of the meal. Totally concerned, I was asked if there was something wrong with it - actually nothing wrong, only that the calvados got to my system so fast and still did till the end of the meal.
