Tanakatsu - Interior | Yvanne Teo

Tanakatsu – Katsu & Teriyaki Specialist

I first heard of Tanakatsu from a posting from a friend who is a friend of the owner… and I mentally noted it on my list of places to try. This was especially ideal for it wasn’t too far to get to at all, nearest tube station is Angel on the northern line.

So with my usual dining partner to try new places to eat, we made a reservation (which was a little overkill as we made it for a very early dinner… 6.30pm!!) and there I was, entering Tanakatsu just before 6.30pm where the owner promptly stated that I must be the one with the reservation! Very astute!

Shown to a table for four where we had only made a reservation for two… I wondered if she had somehow also deduced that I would be ordering several dishes and required a larger table…

The interior is simple, not fussy, a little edgy and trendy perhaps?

Having time on my hand, I had plenty of time to study the menu before my friend’s arrival – I think it was more of a case of what not to order! The menu is also expanded by the daily specials which made the choice even harder. Still, I think we managed to cover the range of the menu.

I like that they offered a combination of katsu and teriyaki dishes which of course we both opted for which left us with some sharing dishes: Double Salmon Roll – Salmon inside, Salmon outside, Avocado; Yaki Oshinko Celery – Sautéed Daikon Pickles with Crunchy Celery (I’ve never tried warm pickles); Hiyayakko – Silky Tofu, Bonito Flakes, Ginger, Wasabi, Soy; and two dishes from the daily specials – lightly seared tuna, and Kushi Katsu of scallop and sweet potato. All served with rice, cabbage salad and additional miso soup.

We definitely needed the larger table, and as we were early we did have the place almost to ourselves – there was a party of Japanese, celebrating a birthday I think, giving us the assurance of authenticity.

I think we spent a fair amount of time chatting and enjoying our meal, the waitress was attentive and discrete, giving us plenty of time to catch up without hurrying us.

The katsu was what I was craving and yes, definitely good! The chicken teriyaki a bonus and a bit greedy of me… alright… the rest of the dishes ordered was very greedy of me (us)! Still… I can say that there are still other dishes I would like to try too, so I will be back for sure.

Quality and freshness, and it all tastes good!

Oh, we were extra greedy… ice cream for dessert! Well, one has to freshen one’s palette after a large meal, right?

Now what did my friend say when she posted the information on Tanakatsu on Facebook? “Best Japanese Katsu curry in London!!”  Well I can agree re the katsu, but I didn’t try the curry version! Next time?
