I would never have thought of a Chinese restaurant in Paddington Central, so here I was for the first time trying out Pearl Liang. About time to assess the differing opinions since there are some who say it is very good, while others say otherwise.
It wasn’t extremely crowded even though we could only get an early booking for Saturday lunch. I was early for my lunch date, as I had never been to Paddington Central, I gave myself plenty of time to locate Pearl Liang. The “square” is tiered and turfed, which makes for a great place to chill out with fewer people over the weekend (I presume). I must remember this for a relatively quiet place to meet and hangout.
So dim sum… I was surprised to see they also serve this at night, even though the menu for this was much reduced from the lunch time dim sum menu.
We ordered a selection to test out, some steamed and some fried dim sum, and as an additional dish, we opted to try their lobster noodles!
As dim sum goes, the pastry of the dumplings was more delicate than what you would get at most dim sum restaurants in Soho, with the actual taste of the dishes very comparable. The lobster noodles however were not so impressive, neither the noodles themselves nor the freshness of the lobster. Taste wise… fairly dull too.
We did finish off with dessert – one of my standard comparison choices, mango pudding, and we also opted for the tapioca with yam and coconut milk.
As dim sum restaurants go, I wouldn’t say the pull of Pearl Liang would be their food, but more the overall atmosphere as it is a much more quiet and relaxed restaurant where you can take your time over your meal instead of being rushed. The staff were also very polite and helpful rather than brisk and short which made for a much more pleasant lunch!
