Eat Tokyo is a great to grab a quick bite to eat, either lunch or dinner for some japanese food. Having normally frequented the Eat Tokyo Notting Hill branch, I was on this occasion trying out the Eat Tokyo Trafalgar Square branch. My friend was running more on time than I was and informed me that she was in the queue to get a table for our dinner – a good sign I thought to myself, even at 8.30pm.

The Trafalgar branch of Eat Tokyo is situated just south of Leicester Square down a small side street. During opening times I doubt you will miss it as you just have to look for the queue that forms from the front door.

Being dinner we decided to stick to sashimi and ordered their platter of assorted sashimi, a mixed tempura (seafood and vegetables), agedashi tofu, a seaweed salad and some miso soup. Our neighbouring diners seemed more into their bento boxes or one plate meals. Perhaps that should have been an indication to us as when our food arrived there was hardly space on our table to contain all the dishes – we had to eliminate what plates were “unnecessary”.

By this time our fellow diners had started to comment on the result of our enthusiastic ordering, and admitting that they would definitely be doing the same on their next visit. So a double plus for Eat Tokyo: everyone else seemed to enjoy their meal and were also thinking of re-visiting. But how wrong can you go with ordering sashimi? It is really based on how fresh the fish is and in terms of cut and presentation, that is determined by the chef –  we enjoyed our sashimi very much! Salmon, tuna, prawns, cuttlefish, and scallops. Likewise with our tempura and agedashi tofu dishes: the batter of the tempura nice and light as with the tofu, light and smooth. The  seaweed salad on the other hand was an oddity as the whole presentation was rather “rough”, very unlike the one in the Notting Hill branch were the seaweed salad was very delicate. All this spread, accompanied by some green tea.

Finishing our main meal with a slight struggle, we still had room to have a little something sweet: green tea and black sesame ice creams! Divine! 🙂

So, if you are in the area, need somewhere to have some good wholesome Japanese food, try Eat Tokyo Trafalgar Square: despite the queues, they serve good & quick food, but I am sure as I experienced, the queues are quick to dissapate or if you really can’t  find a table, try not to stick to typical meal times – they open Mon – Sat 12pm – 11.30pm, Sun 12pm – 10.30pm. Or perhaps try their other branches in Notting Hill, Holborn, and Golders Green.
